How is Ayurvedic Abhyanga massage different to Swedish massage?

Have you every wondered about the difference between Ayurvedic Abhyanga massage and the more traditional Swedish massage which is very popular in the West?

Here I have attempted to explain why:

Key Differences

Philosophical Basis: Swedish massage is rooted in Western anatomy and aims at physical benefits like muscle relaxation, while Abhyanga is based on Ayurvedic principles and aims at balancing the body's energies and detoxification.

Techniques and Movements: Swedish massage uses a variety of strokes and techniques to target muscles and improve circulation, whereas Abhyanga involves synchronised, rhythmic strokes designed to harmonize the body's doshas.

Oils Used: Swedish massage generally uses neutral oils, whereas Abhyanga uses specific herbal oils tailored to the individual's dosha type.

Purpose and Benefits: Swedish massage primarily focuses on relaxation, muscle tension relief, and physical health benefits, while Abhyanga aims to balance the body's energies, detoxify, and promote holistic wellness.

Swedish massage is more about muscle manipulation, while Abhyanga is a more immersive experience with extensive use of oil.

Both types of massages offer unique benefits and are chosen based on personal preference, desired outcomes, and sometimes health needs.
